Twitter Points Out The Fragility of Masculinity
Last week, actor and writer Anthony Williams began a surge of tweets using #MasculinitySoFragile to draw attention to … well … the fragility of masculinity, but, in particular, the often ridiculous and sometimes dangerous means men will go to in order to assert their gender. Williams took a major stance as a black queer male feminist and inspired others to call out the typically restrictive masculine social script that many subscribe to. The now well-known hashtag eventually took on an energy of its own and eventually prompted (as you can imagine) a major backlash from Anti-Feminist Twitter.
In a piece for Independent, Williams said, ”For me, the hashtag isn't about how people behave according to their gender, or the policing of gender through products or behaviors. This needs to be worked out, but the strange embodiments of toxic masculinity that we find in society are not the direct cause of the deaths of cis and trans women.”
Check out some of the best #MasculinitySoFragile tweets and check out Williams’ piece for deeper insight into why he popularized the hashtag.
