Dave Bautista has never been shy about showing his support for the LGBTQ+ community, and a recent video is reminding us just how committed he really is.

The wrestler-turned-actor broke down his many tattoos in conversation with GQ, and while there are a number of interesting tidbits in the nine minute segment, there was one coverup in particular that caught some fans’ attention.

“This used to be a team logo,” he said, pointing at a blue rose on his forearm. “I was a part of a team, a person I considered a friend, and someone I really looked up to. And then he later came out publicly with some anti-gay statements and turned out to be an extreme homophobe.”

Bautista’s mother is a lesbian — something he has spoken about frequently — and his former teammate’s homophobia was upsetting enough to him that he no longer wanted a permanent reminder of him inked on his skin.

“I had a huge issue with it,” he explained. “And I just could no longer call him a friend, so I had to cover it up with this.”

Bautista has already gained a reputation as a good, likable guy over the years, particularly after he’s attracted a broader audience with his extremely successful foray into acting. But showing that his support for both his mother and the LGBTQ+ community at large extends into quiet acts of allyship like covering up a tattoo meant a lot to people.
