Elton John & Dua Lipa Named '2022 Hitmakers of the Year' By Variety

This pair knows a thing or two about making hit songs!

In 2021, Elton John and Dua Lipa broke the internet by releasing “Cold Heart (Pnau remix)”. Besides featuring brand-new vocals from Lipa, the song sampled John’s classic hits such as 1972’s “Rocket Man”, 1976’s “Where’s the Shoorah?”, 1983’s “Kiss the Bride”, and 1989’s “Sacrifice”.

“Cold Heart” ultimately peaked at no. 1 on the UK Singles Chart and at no. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it a huge hit for both John and Lipa. The momentum behind this song was so intense that it stayed incredibly relevant in 2022 as well.

Now, Variety has honored Lipa and John as the “Hitmakers of the Year” in 2022. This is an incredible honor for Lipa as a rising star and for John as a veteran musician.

“When we recorded ‘Cold Heart,’ we had no idea of the life it would have,” Lipa told the publication. “What a privilege for that first performance to be at his final show in North America. I could have never imagined a night like this. It reminded me to never stop dreaming.”

John said about Lipa, “I adore her. She is incredibly talented – absolutely brilliant – and so professional. It’s a pleasure to be around someone who is so young, has done so much already and is so humble. She is also great fun, and we get on like a house on fire.”

This year, John also generated a lot of buzz for releasing a collaboration with Britney Spears titled “Hold Me Closer.” This was Spears’ first-ever collaboration after being freed from her conservatorship, making it a landmark moment in her career.
