The Handkerchief Code Explained, Once and for All
You’ve probably heard of the "hanky code" — how gay and bisexual men looking for casual sex signaled to each what they’re interested in through the use of handkerchiefs worn in the back pocket of pants. The hanky code became popular in the 70’s when gay men needed a more subtle way to signal to others that they were indeed gay/bi, and what they were interested in sexually. Fast forward to the modern day advent of hookup apps, and the hanky code has fallen out of favor. We now have other, simpler ways to meet up with other queer men for casual encounters. Hook up apps are also much less ambiguous, as the handkerchief code isn’t universal. Regional colors and codes vary widely. However, there are a few colors that are universal, regardless of region. So here they are. The Handkerchief Code for gay men, explained once and for all.
Top/Bottom Dom/Sub
The first thing you need to know about the handkerchief code is that if you’re wearing the handkerchief on the left side of your body, it means you’re the top/dom/active/giver, whereas if you’re wearing the handkerchief on the right side of your body, you’re a bottom/sub/passive/receiver. Alright, now that we got that out of the way, let’s look at the popular coloring/designs, and what they signify.
