A collection of Ukranian feminists found a creative, eye-catching way to stand up for marriage equality in France over the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, several thousand Catholic and right-wing French citizens took to the streets in a dozen cities to protest France's imminent passage of marriage equality. While the antigay activists, organized by Catholic group Civitas, recycled the standard "one man + one woman = marriage" signage, women from Ukranian feminist group Femen dressed up in nun's habits, took off their shirts, and sprayed white foam from bottles labeled "sperm" on the antigay protestors.
And in case that weren't enough to rile the conservative — but equally ridiculously costumed (see below photo) — haters, the ladies of Femen chanted the words "In Gay We Trust," and had that message and others like "Fuck your God" painted on their bodies. Reports and video show the feminists clashing violently with conservative protestors, who can be seen here hitting and kicking the women. So much for that whole "love thy neighbor" tenet.
Femen posted a Facebook photo on Sunday updating followers about the violence, saying, "French religious nationalists have beaten the FEMEN sextremists during the homophobic catholic demonstration against gey [sic] marriage. FEMEN came to express our support to gey people."
