BuzzFeed Has an Important Lesson for Parents of Trans Kids

The popular internet news website came through big time on this one.

BuzzFeed's LGBT vertical dropped a video on the importance of parents accepting their trans children, and it hit hard. The video, which was posted on Facebook, clocks in at only 2 minutes and 15 seconds, but says a lot within that period. It manages to shed light on the grim, but real, suicide rates for trans people who are not accepted by their family, the reality that there are actually parents out there who don't accept their children, and on how it feels for trans kids to know they're safe at home.

While the video does all of this and more, we must remember that many trans youth will never find acceptance at home. It's a dirt mark on the humanity as a whole that these things happen and that we still haven't managed to build a society that is safe for everyone. If anything, this video is a perfect starting point for people who may not understand trans and gender non-conforming people.

Celebrate the joy in this video and let yourself relish in the good feelings. But don't forget about those who we still must fight for. Check out BuzzFeed's full, heartwarming video below.
