California Same-Sex Couples Free to Marry Again in Six Days

Judge Vaughn Walker has ruled against a stay on same-sex marriages in California, meaning lesbian and gay couples could resume marrying one another in the state asap, according to a press release from Freedom to Marry.

Some local registrars, like West Hollywood's, are ready for a rush of weddings. Such unions have been illegal since voters in the state passed Prop. 8 in November 2008.

Marriages can resume Aug. 18th, according to the National Center for Lesbian Rights, The Courage Campaign and The LA Gay and Lesbian Center.

Last week Walker ruled Prop. 8 unconstitutional but issued a temporary stay of the decision pending arguments from attorneys on both sides.

The legal team defending the ballot measure has already filed an appeal with the U.S. court of appeals for the ninth circuit. On Tuesday the Imperial County board of supervisors also filed an appeal, though it is not clear whether county officials have standing to do so.
