Lady Gaga fans were in for a special Valentine’s Day treat after the singer shared the first look at her role in the upcoming Joker sequel.

The singer is believed to be playing Harley Quinn in the follow up to Todd Phillips’ gritty 2019 take on the Clown Prince of Crime, a theory that is now backed up by the picture she shared to Instagram on Tuesday.

“Folie à Deux,” she wrote, referencing the film’s subtitle, alongside a joker playing card emoji.

Joaquin Phoenix will be reprising his role as Arthur Fleck, a troubled comedian who descended into a life of crime and became the villain known to the world as the Joker. In traditional DC lore, Harley is the psychiatrist formerly known as Harleen Quinzel, who treats the Joker at Arkham Asylum before falling under his spell and joining him as he wages war against Gotham and the Batman. Whether that story comes into play in Joker, or if Phillips takes a different tack, remains to be seen.

We do know, however, that Zazie Beetz will be returning as Sophie Dumond, and both Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener have also joined the cast. Plot details are under wraps, but the sequel is said to be a musical of some sort, which has Gaga fans even more hyped for her part.

Joker: Folie à Deux comes at a turning point for the DCU, with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over helming future DC projects for Warner Bros. Discovery, and a number of in-progress or planned projects getting scrapped or reworked. Despite the uncertain future, this film is fully expected to make its way to the big screen in October 2024.
