Former SheWired contributor Abby Waller launched Dollars for Daughters in March, after growing tired of her mother's outspoken opposition to marriage equality — despite the fact that she attended her daughter's wedding to another woman, and refers to her Waller's wife as her daughter-in-law. When Waller's mother sent her a check for her birthday earlier this year, Waller decided to donate the lump sum to Freedom to Marry. Teaming up with friends and allies, Waller raised more than $1,000 for the organization — and a new pro-equality campaign was born, just as the queer nation holds its breath to see if the Supreme Court will recognize the fundamental right for LGBT people to marry the person they love.
Every two months, Dollars for Daughters raises money to donate to a different pro-LGBT nonprofit, simultaneously raising awareness about the chosen organization. This month, Dollars for Daughters is raising money for Equality Virginia, the leading statewide nonpartisan educational, research, and advocacy organization seeking full equality for all LGBT Virginians.
"My mother may be on the wrong side of history and this hurts me in a way I could never put into words, but I hope that I can turn that pain into progress," writes Waller. "Her numerous hateful words about gay marriage and the LGBTQ community have inspired me to share [my] story and start a fundraising campaign. I can only hope that these words will be read and shared by many. I hope that friends and family reach out in support of their LGBTQ loved ones. We cannot fight this fight alone. With so much hanging in the balance, we need your help now more than ever."
"It all started with a narrative about a situation that occurred with my mother and her anti-gay marriage actions," continues Waller. "I wanted to take the pain from that situation and use it fuel something positive. I'm a daughter, raising dollars, for something I care about."
