Oreo Released a Short Coming Out Film & Is Someone Cutting Onions?!?
Grab your tissues, everyone. You're gonna need them for this one!
As part of recent celebrations for National Coming Out Day this past weekend, long-running cookie brand Oreo released a touching short film, simply called Proud Parent, that tells the story of a queer woman named Jen who is taking her girlfriend Amy home to meet her family for the first time. While her mother and sister are more than happy to welcome Amy into the family, Jen's dad still seems to be wrapping his head around the fact that his daughter has a girlfriend, and the slight awkwardness in the air is a familiar feeling that many queer people still have to go through in the coming out process. Luckily for us, though, towards the end of the nearly three-minute-long clip, Jen's dad opens up in the best way and shows an amazing (and colorful AF!) gesture to let Jen and Amy know he accepts and loves them.
The short film is a part of Oreo's new #ProudParent campaign, a collaboration with LGBTQ+ parenting and allyship org PFLAG, which seeks to create "a year-long initiative designed to shine a spotlight on the powerful impact love & acceptance can have on LGBTQ+ youth," according to the official description. "Together we're committed to empowering and inspiring parents, families, and allies to come out in loud, public support."
Coming out is never easy, but it's always a hell of a lot better when you're surrounded by loving and accepting people, and this sweet AF film from Oreo helps prove that!
