Much better choice.

Red Sonja has finally found its replacement director!

Transparent creator Jill Soloway has been tapped to both write and direct the film, in what sounds like a complete reimagining of the film after Bryan Singer’s removal earlier this year.

The project is set up under Millennium Films, and studios are reportedly already approaching with renewed interest in Soloway’s take on the story.

Red Sonja has been struggling to get off the ground with the right creative team for over a decade, with the most recent iteration involving Bryan Singer. The film was put on hold when an exposé accusing Singer of various sexual misconduct including rape was published in The Atlantic. He was finally dropped from the project a month later.

Soloway is fresh off of the finale of Transparent, and has a long history of creating film and television that excels at nuanced portrayals of female characters — something previous directors attached to Red Sonja weren’t exactly known for.

“I can’t wait to bring Red Sonja’s epic world to life,” Soloway told Deadline. “Exploring this powerful mythology and evolving what it means to be a heroic is an artistic dream come true.”

Details of Soloway’s pitch are still under wraps, and there’s no word yet as to who may be considered for the titular role, but this is a promising shift for the long-anticipated adaptation.

And if Red Sonja finally gets off the ground with Soloway’s involvement, it will make them the first non-binary director to helm a major studio superhero film.
