Russia's increasingly violent crackdown on LGBT people — most recently in the form of violent attacks and draft legislation that would remove children from the homes of their LGBT parents — has rightly attracted international criticism.
But in the wake of Russian president Vladimir Putin's diplomatic solution to one aspect of the Syrian crisis, combined with his bold op-ed in the New York Times critiquing "American exceptionalism," some right-wing pundits are "hot to Trotsky" for the Russian leader, notes Rachel Maddow.
"It's one thing for the right to fall in love with its own politicians," said the out MSNBC anchor in a segment on Friday's show. "To make Ronald Reagan a saint, to make Sarah Palin their collective fake girlfriend. But the President of Russia, you guys? He is not that into you! Seriously. I know you guys hate President Obama, so it feels good to have a man-crush on somebody else, but this guy is the president of Russia. Zip it up, you guys, seriously. Have some respect."
