Junior Brittney Griner recorded a double-double while leading the Baylor Lady Bears to an 80-61 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the women’s NCAA basketball championship on Tuesday night, according to CBS News.

With the win, Baylor also secured a spot in the record books by becoming the first team in NCAA history (both men and women) to go undefeated while winning 40 games in a single season. Baylor is the seventh team to go undefeated, but no other team has notched 40 wins.

The 6-foot-8 Griner netted 26 points (17 in the second half) and grabbed 13 rebounds, Odyssey Sims contributed 19, and Destiny Williams added 12.

During a postgame interview, the Notre Dame (ND) head coach, Muffet McGraw, caused a stir when she “complimented” Griner by saying that she plays just like a guy. "I think she's one of a kind. I think she's like a guy playing with women," McGraw said.

When asked later about the opposing coach’s comment, Griner said she took it as a compliment.

Devereaux Peters, the ND standout, had to spend some costly time on the bench, having been called for a fourth foul early in the second half, and Baylor took advantage. With Peters riding the pine, Baylor went on a 33-11 run, putting the final nail in ND’s coffin.

Skylar Diggins, led the Irish with 20 points, a valiant effort, but the squad fell short of reaching their goal of a championship title. 2012 is the second year in a row that Notre Dame has made the finals, but unfortunately, the team will return without a trophy.
