Chicago's Top Catholic, Cardinal Francis George, Urges Lawmakers to Reject Civil Unions
The leader of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Chicago is urging Illinois lawmakers to reject a bill establishing civil unions for gay couples, saying it would “change the nature of marriage.” Cardinal Francis George issued a statement Monday saying that “the public understanding of marriage will be negatively affected by passage of a bill that ignores the natural fact that sexual complementarity is at the core of marriage." State representative Greg Harris, a gay man who backs the legislation, said George is either “misinformed” or exaggerating the potential effects of the bill, which could come to a vote as early as next week.
