Smith Student Proposes ‘Exclusive’ Sorority for Straight Girls

An undergraduate student at Smith College sent out an email soliciting other students to form a sorority that would be an “exclusive group for straight girls.”

The email detailed how the unidentified student felt “marginalized” and “like the minority” as “a straight girl at Smith,” reports Jezebel. In response, she proposed creating a sorority, reportedly a chapter of Delta Gamma, with other like-minded young women.

“We would have sorority mixers with Amherst men, weekly dinner dates, weekly photoshoots where we would dress up nice [and] baking nights,” the student wrote. “We would also get Sorority apparel (even Lily Pulitzer has the cutest DG stuff!) and we’d have traditions, like every wednesday we wear pink haha.”

The email was originally posted on the Tumblr profile of “a quieter rioter,” another Smith student who then removed it after the internet backlash. The document also stated that a mixer with the men’s basketball team of Amherst College was forthcoming.

Mary Ellen Hardies, Delta Gamma’s national director of communication, told USA Today that she had no knowledge of the proposed chapter, the news of which has gone viral on Twitter and Tumblr. She also stated that the exclusionary membership of the proposed chapter ran contrary to the sorority’s values.

"Our attorney has been in contact with the university trying to figure out what the heck is going on, who this girl is, to what extent things are happening," Hardies said. "That sort of approach does not fall in line with our values at all."
