Married Lesbian Couple in India Seek Protection from Family Members Who've Threatened Death

A recently married lesbian couple from Manesar, a small town near New Delhi, have asked a court to protect them from family members after receiving death threats. The two women, aged 20 and 25, ran away from home and got married, despite objections from their families. While homosexuality is not illegal in India, same-sex marriages are not recognized by the law.

A recently married lesbian couple from Manesar, a small town near New Delhi, have asked a court to protect them from family members after receiving death threats.

"Our family members can take harsh steps against us," they said. "They even threatened to kill us. We were married on the 22nd and are now in court seeking protection."

The two women, aged 20 and 25, ran away from home and got married, despite objections from their families. While homosexuality is not illegal in India, same-sex marriages are not recognized by the law.

 NDTV quotes a lawyer for the women as saying, "After several murders of couples, we have enforced stricter laws for them. The road ahead is far from easy, but these couples aren't deterred."

Their case was due to go to court today. "Don't fear anything," said one of the women. "Just follow your heart."
