Texas Senator Pens Supportive Open Letter to Lesbian Daughter on Father's Day

Texas Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa (D-McAllen) took Father’s Day as an opportunity to write an open letter supporting marriage equality to his lesbian daughter.

“As a society we should not tolerate acts of discrimination, hate or violence for any reason,” Sen. Hinojosa wrote. “We are all equals. I remain committed to the cause of equality and most importantly in fighting to protect you and the children of all fathers. All men and women should have the freedom to choose their partner.”

In February 2013, Sen. Hinojosa introduced Senate Bill 480 which would overturn part of Texas’s Defense of Marriage Act and allow for same-sex couples to enter into civil unions.

According to Texas Legislature Online, the bill is still in the State Affairs committee. If approved through the committee, the voters will have a chance to decide whether or not to allow for same-sex civil unions.
