Pope Lashes Out at Abortion, Gay Marriage

Pope Benedict XVI has called abortion and same-sex marriage two of the most "insidious and dangerous" threats facing the world today. Benedict made the comments to Catholic educators and social workers after celebrating an outdoor Mass before an estimated 400,000 people in Fatima, Portugal. Meanwhile, the Catholic church's sex abuse scandal was not foremost in the good Pope's thoughts.

Pope Benedict XVI has called abortion and same-sex marriage two of the most "insidious and dangerous" threats facing the world today, according to the Associated Press.

Benedict made the comments to Catholic educators and social workers after celebrating an outdoor Mass before an estimated 400,000 people in Fatima, Portugal.

In Portugal, abortion facilities have been available since 2007 and in January, its Parliament passed a bill allowing same-sex marriage.

The AP is reporting that Benedict told the gathering that he appreciated their efforts fighting abortion and promoting the family based on the "indissoluble marriage between a man and woman."

He said that they can "help respond to some of the most insidious and dangerous threats to the common good today.  Alongside numerous other forms of commitment, such initiatives represent essential elements in the building of the civilization of love."

Fatima is one of the most important shrines in Christianity with thousands of Catholics visiting the shrine each year in search of a cure for their diseases.  Many followers believe that the Virgin Mary is responsible for healing many who visit.
In reference to the molestation scandal gripping the church, Benedict admitted earlier this week that "sins within the church" were to blame. However, by Thursday, he turned his attention back to "core church teachings."
