The pinnacle of a good documentary is to illuminate engrained societal problems that go unnoticed by the majority of the population. An exceptional documentary engages the audience to explore issues. David Thorpe's Do I Sound Gay? is this summer’s documentary that completely fits that bill.
Thorpe created this film to gain insight and answers about his lifelong insecurity with his voice, which he believed sounded gay.
Is there such a thing as a gay voice?
Why do some people sound gay, while others don’t?
How is the gay voice a pop culture mainstay while also being the origin of harassment and bullying for so many?
Thorpe answered these questions and spurred conversation through celebrity interviews, visits to speech pathologists and chats with scholars. His ultimate goal was to better understand the elusive “gay voice.”
As of July 10, you can see the film on on-demand.
