The Fosters Recap: Crime and Punishment

The time has come for the family to face the Brandon/Dani debacle.

When the family's away, the Adams Fosters will deal with big, relationship-shattering issues. Since Callie and Jude have plans to spend the day on the Quinn Family yacht and Jesus and Mariana are off dealing wrestling/dance team commitments, Lena tells Brandon it's time to tell Stef about what happened with Dani. Cue the credits!

At wrestling practice, Emma and Jesus struggle to be amicable teammates following the revelation that he lied to her about Hayley. After a cold dis to his now GF ("I think it's clear she's everything I'm not, and everything I don't want to be," is the zinger of the night), Emma storms away and Jesus retreats back to Hayley. Jude and Callie begin their yacht adventure with the overly excited Sophia. Jude's uncomfortable that Sophia and Callie look so much alike, but the thrill of boating takes over and he starts having fun exploring with Robert. They end up having a heart-to-heart where Robert explains he wants to get to know Jude too, and he doesn't want to get in the way of Callie and Jude's relationship. Seems legit. For now...

Lena and Brandon call Stef and Mike together for the family meeting we've all been waiting for. At first, Stef thinks the conversation might be about Brandon wanting hand surgery again, but it quickly takes a serious turn when Brandon recounts the events of the night he and Dani slept together. He claims it was his fault, that he was drunk and not thinking clearly, but Stef immediately blames Dani and she and Mike get into a screaming match. Brandon runs out of the room, leaving his parents to face what is clearly a disturbing revelation.

Back to Haysus since BranDani drama is too much to handle. Hayley wants to hang out with him that night (/always), but Jesus explains he has a team dinner and can't make it. The dance team then huddles up to discuss their trip to LA for a competition, but since they don't have enough funds, at least one team mate won't be able to make it. Since Mariana is definitely not the world's strongest dancer, she's rightly nervous she'll be the one booted from the trip. Luckily, new team member Tia is super awesome and offers to help Mariana. That is, until Mariana makes a series of awkward comments hinting that Tia is a good dancer because she's black, and Tia takes back her offer. It is comforting to know that in a world of change, we can always count on Mariana making us all uncomfortable.

Stef talks with Brandon in private and informs him that, since he was a minor, what happened was illegal and not his fault. She goes on to tell him that in many of the cases she's handled like this it's common for the boys to not think they've been raped. Brandon insists it's not like that, but Stef pushes that Dani needs to face legal action for what she did. Brandon tells her that he won't cooperate if they arrest Dani and will tell the police he made it up if an investigation goes any farther. Mike is obviously struggling with this information, wondering if Brandon's lying and laughing off the idea of accusing Dani of raping Brandon. He tells Stef that he "knows how a sixteen-year-old boy thinks," before cutting the converstaion short and leaving the house.

Sophia and Callie try to bond on the yacht, but Sophia keeps slipping into a sudden aggression against her mom and the priviledged life she has. She seems to want to agree with everything Callie says, even if it means insulting her family and education. When Callie leaves, Sophia's mother lets her know that using that kind of behavior isn't going to cut it anymore. Later, Sophia asks Callie if it's weird getting a glimpse of the life she could have had if Robert and Callie's mom and stayed together. Callie says it was probably for the best, because if they had there would be no Sophia or Jude. Sophia's response, "That might not be such a bad thing," is eerily foreshadowing. There is definitely something up with Sophia.

Back at school, the dance team gets to know a little bit more about Mariana, but when the conversation turns to Mariana's birth parents, she insists she never knew them and turns the conversation back to funds for the team. She believes she may be able to use her mom's vice prinicpal-ness to get the money for the trip (and stay on the team, of course). Lena shuts that down, saying that she can't show special priviledge to her kids. Stuck, Mariana starts to face the reality of not being able to go to the competition because of her dancing incompetence. Her soon-to-be BF Mat tells her she needs to get over herself, leading her to re-approach Tia. Luckily, Tia's forgiven her for any awkward comments and agrees to be her private tutor.

Stef and Lena continue to try and deal with the Brandon/Dani situation, and Stef rails against Mike for defending Dani and ignoring red flags. Lena calms her down, explaining that Dani is the only person at fault here, and that Stef really needs to be less hard on Mike. Stef sits down to talk to him, and he finally seems to be seeing the reality of the situation. Stef asks what Mike would do if the situation had been flipped and a teacher had slept with Mariana, and Mike immediately says he'd lock the teacher up. Stef asks why Brandon is any different, and he has no argument there.

Before departing for the day, Callie and Robert talk about the college fund Robert had offered to set up for Callie. She doesn't want to accept it, but when Robert explains that this is what Callie's mother would have wanted Callie changes her mind. She and Robert then bond over some photos of her mom in her younger, happier days, and Callie keeps one as a memento.

In creepy girlfriend news, Hayley shows up at Jesus' house, weeping about discovering her parents are divorcing and telling him she doesn't want to spend the night alone. Jesus cancels on the wrestling dinner and goes to dote on his disasterous girlfriend. When he gets back, however, Mariana informs him that Hayley's known about her parents' divorce for months, and he just got tricked into being with her. Back at home, Brandon apologizes to Mike, but Mike's more concerned with warning Brandon about being careful with alcohol, since alcoholism runs in the family. Mike goes on to say that, no matter the circumstances, what Dani did was illegal and something has to be done about it. And indeed, that very night the police show up at Dani's door and she's handcuffered and dragged away. Adieu, Dani, it's been frustrating!

Jude finally tells Callie just how bummed he is that she discovered the Quinn family in the first place, and that "it sucks" that he has to share her. But since he already learned to share her with the Fosters, he's sure he can learn to handle the Quinn family as well. Speaking of the Quinns, we actually get a private glimpse into Sophia and Robert's life as they walk home together. Sophia says she wishes they could adopt Callie, and Robert says that they technically wouldn't have to since he's still her legal birth father. Sophia smiles like this is an okay plotline we're about to approach here. Next week, however, the house burns down (last week I confused this with this week's episode - kindly stop releasing promos early, ABC Family!) so Sophia's selfishness is going to have to take a back seat for a week. Just saying, if Sophia isn't supposed to be a red flag of some epic disturbance in the future, this show is lying to us all.
