As a site that features entertainment and news geared toward the lesbian community at large we are committed to highlighting artists, musicians and craftspeople in the community. This week we bring you New York based musician Dawnie Love, who’s been singing, writing songs and being an all-around adorable chanteuse for more than a decade.

Music isn’t just a large part of Dawnie Love's life, it’s essentially part of her DNA. The ethereal singer/songwriter has been performing since she could first muster the ability to pound on a suitcase along with a Beatles record when she was just a little thing.

Love gained her first real experience in the mid-nineties when she joined the New England-based group Nzingas Daughters as a guitarist. After cutting her teeth with that group, the forward-thinking Dawnie put together her own band, the jazzy fusion act Swivel Hips.

The all-female group garnered a large following in and around their native CT, racked up several local awards, released their own CD, and opened for national acts such as Ani Difranco, Bitch and Animal, the Neville Brothers, Juliana Hatfield, and Michelle Ndegeocello. A crowd of 60,000 enjoyed the worldly sounds of Swivel Hips at the 2000 Millennium March for LGBT equality in Washington, D.C.

After six years with Swivel Hips Dawnie struck out on her own again in 2003. Relocating to the Big Apple, the plucky songstress began honing her craft with a variety of artists, including G. Love bass player Jimi Jazz, noted drummer Chauncy Yearwood, songwriter Ben Davis, tenor saxophonist Lozenzo Sanguedolce and electronic-rock music duo Streetlab.
