The teaser trailer for Barbie has arrived, and it looks as beautifully unhinged as we could have hoped.

Opening up on images of a nearly untouched world, a narrator (Helen Mirren!!) assures us that “Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls,” over images of young children playing with dolls in the dirt and sand.

“But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls. Until…”

Move over, 2001: A Space Odyssey — Barbie’s taking over!

If we weren’t already sold by a larger than life Margot Robbie appearing in the wilderness while young girls clutch their dolls and look on in amazement, the subsequent sparkle and pizzazz of the actual world of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie would have done the trick.

Early images from the set, particularly of Ryan Gosling’s Ken, drew mixed reactions, although it seemed the naysayers were largely people who wouldn’t have been interested in the pink plastic paradise anyway.

But the trailer seems to confirm the hope sparked in many by those pictures — this is going to be one flashy film, larger than life with an ultra-specific tone that its actors seem to have embraced wholeheartedly.

The plot of Barbie is unknown, but honestly we don’t even need details to throw money at it. This trailer says all we need to know.
