NBC on SheWired: Iowa's Gay Marriage Battle - Video

The long time battle over gay marriage in Iowa ventured into new territory in December 2008, appearing before the Iowa Supreme Court. The decision the following Spring to allow same-sex marriage made headlines across the nation. More than a year later, that fight converged around three of the justices involved in the Supreme Court ruling who were all on the November 2010 ballot for approval. The final tally indicates that all three of those justices will lose their jobs.

The long time battle over gay marriage in Iowa ventured into new territory in December 2008, appearing before the Iowa Supreme Court. The decision the following Spring to allow same-sex marriage made headlines across the nation. However, those opposing gay marriage vowed to continue to the fight to keep marriage between a man and a woman.

More than a year later, that fight converged around three of the justices involved in the Supreme Court ruling who were all on the November 2010 ballot for approval. The final tally indicates that all three of those justices will lose their jobs.

The new republican speaker of the house says there will be more votes to come, as efforts to have the state vote marriage back to being between a man and a woman are already underway.

Those fighting for equality still believe that most Iowans are on their side.

While those three judges may have been voted out because of just one ruling, but that ruling still stands. it is the rulings to come in the future that have some experts worried.
