A Florida man claims his landlord is forcing him out of his apartment because he’s gay. And he’s got the video to back it up.

Randal Coffman moved into an apartment attached to Jackie Cooper’s home in Middleburg, outside of Jacksonville, at the start of December.

He says Cooper told him she didn’t want him having girls over late at night, and he responded that it wouldn’t be a problem, since he’s gay.

“She was very nice at first,” Coffman said of his landlady. But after she found out he was gay, things changed.

“You didn’t tell me you’re gay until yesterday,” Cooper says on the video Coffman recorded.

“Why do I have to tell you I’m gay? I don’t have to tell you,” he responds.

Cooper hits back with: “You think I want homosexuals coming in and out of my place like that?”

Cooper ultimately told Coffman that he had to leave the apartment, which has a separate entryway from her home, by the 27th of December.

The two did not have a written lease, only a month-to-month verbal agreement, and Cooper insists the reason she’s kicking Coffman out of the apartment is because he wouldn’t provide her with a copy of his driver’s license, and because his friends parked their cars in the shared driveway for days at a time. Coffman denies the latter.

Though the video recording makes it fairly obvious that this Florida landlord doesn’t want a gay renter, there isn’t much that can be done. Jacksonville has protections against discrimination against LGBTQ tenants, but those rights don’t reach to Middleburg.
