A stage collapsed killing one and injuring nine others in preparation for Madonna’s concert Thursday in Marseille, France and forcing he upcoming show to be cancelled.
The accident, which occurred at the 60,000-seat Stade Velodrome, killed a 53-year-old French man who’d been helping to set up a stage that collapsed, according to Yahoo News.
Fifty technicians from a range of nationalities were working to set up the structure according to the city sports official Richard Miron.
The roof of the stage became unbalanced as it was being lifted by four cranes toppling one of the cranes and crashing onto the structure below, causing the stage collapse, according to firefighters.
"There were a lot of open fractures, of injuries, it was a messy sight," a rescue worker said.
The Queen of Pop, Madonna, released a statement late Thursday regardiing the tragedy:
"I am devastated to have just received this tragic news. My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news," Madonna said.
Madonna was slated to perform there Sunday as part of her “Sticky and Sweet” tour.
