11 Amazing Pieces of Laverne Cox Fan Art That You Need To See
It was just a month ago that transgender pioneer Laverne Cox was immortalized in wax by Madame Tussaud’s during San Francisco’s Pride Weekend, but fans of the actress have been making art since she stepped into the spotlight. If you take a quick journey over to Tumblr and do a quick search, you'll find mountains of Laverne fan art. Take a look at some of the best creations made in her likeness over the past few years.
1. Laverne the Wonder Woman
At 16 years old, Artist Oliviette has an impeccable eye for digital art. Her Tumblr is peppered with celebrity drawings featuring Rihanna and anime characters. She isn’t the first to make the connection between Laverne and Wonder Woman, but her take is a nice cartoon approach to the concept.
2. The Fairy
Illustrator and digital artist Monika is quite possibly one of the most talented artists on Tumblr. Her work regularly features layers and layers of texture that add a dreamy feel to her subjects. This painting is one of a series in which she depicts her favorite Orange Is The New Black characters with a fairy tale bend. Check out more of her work from this collection here!
3. The Real Laverne as Wonder Woman
Ray’s art usually falls in the realm of line art or digital illustration, but this seemingly quick Photoshop foray has garnered nearly 200, 000 likes and reblogs on Tumblr. It incorporates Laverne’s portrait from the TIME cover to give the full effect of her superheroine status!
4. Sophia in Red
Everyone knows Laverne’s character on OITNB, Sophia Burset, is the most fabulous inmate of all. This work by Elizabeth Beals features a fantasy version of the incarcerated character and is featured in the online OITNB fan zine, “Standing Still.”
5. Laverne Cox
Simply titled “Laverne Cox,” Misha VanVaerenbergh’s digital painting of the star speaking during her “Ain’t I A Woman” tour gets the ombré in her Beyonce locks down perfectly!
6. Tiny Detective
This cute post was based off a photo taken after the 2014 GLAAD Media Awards in which fellow actress Ellen Page presented Cox with her acknowledgement for the year. Artist Blue Delliquanti’s style draws from her long running webcomic, “O Human Star.”
7. Laverne Cox, The Actual Goddess
Palina hails from Germany and has a way with charcoals and pencil! Here she’s masterfully depicts Cox in a soft and delicately powerful demeanor. Check out more of the artist’s work here.
8. Trans Is Beautiful
19-year-old Tatenda Dhobha is an aspiring commercial artist living in Australia. They dabbles between creating her art digitally and traditionally, but their take on Cox displays their mastery of the paper. The details in the rose crown are to die for!
9. Sketch of Sophia
Sophia is the Empress of Sassy and artist Brandy perfectly captured all of her glory in this digital portrait sketch. Check out more artwork at Brandy’s Quirks.
10. Trinity of Femininity
M. Falconer considers herself a "young pop art portrait artist." (Warhol would definitely be proud!) Here Cox is depicted with fellow black pop icons, Queen Bey and Onika the Goddess. This femme overdose was much needed. The original is going for $147 CAD, but if that’s out of your budget you can cop a print here!
11. Laverne Slaying all the Haters
With a few hundred notes on Tumblr, clearly the Internet loves 17-year-old April’s artistic simplicity. She’s great at inserting humor into her work. (Who wouldn’t love to see Laverne Cox in a lavender leotard roller skating with a rainbow in the background?) Follow her art blog here!
That’s it for our round up, but clearly there’s a bevy of Laverne-inspired fanart out there! Do you have any favorites that didn’t make the list? Share them in the comments below!
