Milk, the film that tells the story of gay rights leader and pioneer, Harvey Milk, has been voted the gay film of the decade.
A Stonewall poll of 800 people picked the Gus van Sant film as the number one gay film of the decade.
The film was commended for its “realistic portrayal of gay people,” according to PinkNews.
Cleve Jones, a student-activist who interned for and worked closely with Milk, expressed his pride in the achievement.
“As someone who was depicted in the film, I feel very proud that gay people are saying it’s the most significant film for them in the last decade – it shows that the campaign for full gay equality has reached a whole new generation of people, which gives me real hope,” Jones said.
The Kids Are All Right came in second place, followed by Brokeback Mountain in third, A Single Man in fourth and The Hours rounding up the list in fifth place.
