5. TV: Those Who Kill

The boys can keep their homoerotic crime thrillers (The Following, Hannibal, et al) — I can’t be more excited for tonight’s premiere of the new Chloë Sevigny crime drama, Those Who Kill, on A&E. Modeled after a popular Danish crime series that's based on the bestselling novels from author Elsebeth Egholm, Those Who Kill follows Catherine (played by Sevigny), a freshly minted and incredibly smart police detective who tracks down serial killers along with a forensic psychiatrist (James D’Arcy), all while investigating what happened to her own missing brother. It’s a dark, creepy psychological thriller and one in which sure, women are victims (because statistically, we are), but we’re also the ones solving the crimes and beating back the bad guys. Premieres tonight at 10 on A&E.

4. BOOK: Nothing Like a Dame: Conversations With the Great Women of Musical

We love our Broadway divas, and gay theater writer Eddie Shapiro interviews the best of them in his new book. He selected Tony Award­-winning stars who have spent the majority of their careers in theater, not those known primarily for film or television. OK, one of his subjects, Angela Lansbury, has had a stellar career in all three mediums, but his other interviewees are primarily stage luminaries, including Elaine Stritch, Carol Channing, Patti LuPone, Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, and Idina Menzel. 3. MUSIC: Cheryl Barnes, Listen to This

Eclectically trained jazz singer Cheryl Barnes — she's an operatic performer as well — releases her first album, a selection of jazz and blues tunes in which she's backed by stellar musicians including Brandon Fields on sax, John Hammond on piano, and Rickey Minor on bass. Barnes lends her formidable talents to a diverse selection of songs; the title track's written by Barnes's husband, Phillip Cabaso, while the singer brings her distinctive interpretation to a Joni Mitchell fave, "Come in From the Cold." 2. BOOK: Kitty Genovese: The Murder, the Bystanders, the Crime that Changed America
Kitty Genovese, a young woman murdered in Queens, N.Y., in 1964, is known mostly for the circumstances of her death: Supposedly many of her neighbors knew she was being attacked but ignored her cries for help. Author David Cook debunks that version of events in this new book, and he also reveals much about Genovese's life as a lesbian in a closeted era. She emerges as a vivacious, attractive, ambitious woman who worked double shifts as a bartender-manager in hopes of saving enough money to open an Italian restaurant, and in her spare time enjoyed New York's folk-music scene and lesbian bars. Cook's research included hours of interviews with her partner, Mary Ann Zielonko, and he offers a touching account of their relationship, plus some enraging information about the homophobic assumptions of police investigating the murder. He also reports that during the perpetrator's trial, Zielonko had to pose as merely Genovese's "roommate"; the prosecution thought any intimation that Genovese was a lesbian would make her a less sympathetic victim. 1. MUSIC: The Head and the Heart’s “Another Story” Video
I’m not exactly sure what the song is about, but I can’t get enough of the new lesbians-in-love video from the Head and the Heart. Starring Troian Bellisario from Pretty Little Liars and the incredibly gorgeous Hayley McCune, the video is a heartwarming and heartbreaking look at young love and its endurance. We’d like a happier ending, but the girls are gorgeous and the video stays with you for days.
