Florida Governor Charlie Crist, who endorsed that state’s anti-gay marriage initiative, married Carole Rome amidst protests from same-sex marriage activists in St. Petersburg Friday.
About 250 demonstrators, urged to sport pink t-shirts by Impact Florida, protested outside St. Petersburg’s First United Methodist Church where Crist, 52 and Rome, 39, said their “I dos.”
Some demonstrators donned the pink t-shirts while others held protest signs that read “Congratulations Governor Crist. When can I get married?” according to Towleroad.
Crist endorsed Amendment 2, Florida’s anti-gay marriage initiative that was added to the state’s constitution after it passed by 61.9 percent during November's election.
Prior to the demonstration at Crist’s wedding, Impact-Florida’s spokeswoman Lorna Bracewell told GaySoFla.com that the protest would be peaceful and respectful.
"Our objective will be to celebrate the governor's fundamental right to marry,” Bracewell said.
"He is exercising the same fundamental right millions of Floridians are now denied because of the passage of Amendment 2,” she said. “Perhaps it will inspire him and the many Floridians that voted for Amendment 2 to rethink their positions on the question of what constitutes a marriage.”
Their marriage to each other is the second for both Crist and Rome.
