Kellie Martin, known for roles on Life Goes On and ER, is now playing Army Captain Nicole Galassini on Lifetime's Army Wives. Nicole is out and partnered, making the military character a first of its kind for television. The much-loved Martin (how cute was she on LGO?) is now very much a woman, and she shared her thoughts with Entertainment Weekly on playing Nicole.
"Nobody’s ever seen me do a part like this,” Martin tells the magazine. “I think it was a bit of a surprise for the viewers.” But at the same time, “There’s nothing in your face about it. Army Wives is not getting up on a soap box,” she says. “Nicole’s situation is so common, and it’s actually something that people are talking about right now,” in regard to the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell."
Martin also discussed Broadway legend Patti LuPone, who played her mother on LGO and again on Army Wives. Nicole's mother has problems with her sexual orientation, leading to emotional scenese between the two actresses. Martin says she always admired LuPone's great ability to cry on-camera. According to Martin, LuPone said, "Honey, I've got a suitcase full of sorrow."
