Producer (Frida, Ugly Betty) and actress Salma Hayek takes on the witches of Oz with her next project, adapting Gregory Maguire’s acclaimed novel Wicked to the screen with an eight-hour mini series for ABC, according to the Ausiello Files.
While it would be exciting to see Hayek team up with the likes of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth to recreate show-stopping numbers from the juggernaut musical based on Maguire’s book, the mini series would be a faithful interpretation of Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Ausiello reports.
However, in the post-modern world of Hollywood where it’s becoming ever more difficult to determine the originals from the copies, Universal is currently developing a Wicked film based on the musical, which is of course, based on Maguire’s novel, which is based on L. Frank Baum’s classic children’s books and so on, and so on…
Hayek, who’s been working behind the scenes more and more, save for her hilarious arc on 30 Rock, is considering taking a supporting role in the project, which is being penned by Band of Brothers scribe Erik Jendresen. ABC Studios is producing along with Hayek and Ventanarosa Productions.
