With Knock at the Cabin premiering this week, Ben Aldridge recently shared a hilarious anecdote that shows just how differently this movie could have played out.

The film centers around a gay couple, played by Aldridge and Jonathan Groff, who are vacationing at a remote cabin in the woods with their young daughter (Kristen Cui), when they are taken hostage by four zealots (Dave Bautista, Rupert Grint, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Abby Quinn) claiming the world is about to come to an end if the family doesn’t make a choice.

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan and based on a book by Paul G. Tremblay (The Cabin at the End of the World), the thriller has been highly anticipated, in part for featuring a couple who simply happens to be gay at the center of it all.

But in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Aldridge admitted there was some confusion going into his audition about his role. Namely, that he had been under the impression it was actually Bautista who was meant to play his character’s husband.

“All it said on the email that I got was Dave Bautista was in the film,” he recalled. “So I was doing this entire audition thinking I was auditioning to be his younger boyfriend and that Dave was gonna be this total daddy gay bear.”

He admitted that it even went so far that he mentioned to Shyamalan that he had “never seen Dave play a part like this kind of sensible father figure before.”

“He was like, ‘What are you saying? … Dave isn’t playing Eric. Are you mad?’ It really affected the way I was playing the scenes. A little bit like, ‘Hey, daddy!’” he joked.

For his part, Bautista has recently made waves talking about how he hopes to be the leading man in a romcom some day. And actually, if Hollywood wanted to make that a gay romcom, we would be extremely here for it; Aldridge already provided the perfect title and everything.

Hey Daddy, a queer romcom starring Dave Bautista, coming when??
