The operating room is bringing more drama.
Jake Borelli has starred as Dr. Levi Schmitt on Grey's Anatomy since season 14 and he's counting down the days until the upcoming 20th season.
"It's wild. You get to see these deeply well rounded characters and you get to see them grow. Especially for the queer community, that's something that we need. It shows queer people in all different facets, so I've been very fortunate," Borelli tells PRIDE.
Throughout the past six years, Borelli has personally grown as an individual by playing a queer character on screen.
"It's really mirrored a lot of my life. He and I have walked hand in hand through a lot of big life moments. The first few seasons dealing with his queerness and coming out was super fun. [It was] super exciting to talk about a queer story that's rooted in pride and self acceptance. I've really been able to do a lot with this character."
Although season 19 just wrapped up, fans are already speculating as to what drama might be coming for the monumental 20th season.
"By the end of season 19, I feel like we're starting to get a grip on [Dr. Schmitt's] own teaching technique. I'm hoping that we get to see him thrive a little bit more in that space. I keep going back to the blood donation storyline, for queer men specifically, because we talked about it quite a bit at the end of last season. I would love to revisit that and educate people more on that."
As Pride Month comes to a close, Borelli is hoping his character's representation can give the LGBTQ+ community some encouragement as the fight for equality continues.
"That's what I find really special. It is a moment for all of us to come together. Right now, we are being pushed back. There's huge things happening right now that are taking away the stuff that we fought for and the generations before us fought for. It is important this whole year to fight back."
