Rosie O’Donnell's Son Rebels Against his Liberal Mom by Going to Military School

Rosie talks her total lack of Kardashian awareness and why she sent her son to military academy.

Rosie O’Donnell won’t be cracking any jokes about Kim Kardashian’s fly-by-night divorce on her OWN Network talk show.

“I’ve never seen any of the Karadshian shows, I don’t really know the family or the story,” O’Donnell explained during a Billy Bush Show interview. “All I know is Bruce Jenner looks weird, right? When that all that [happened], the writers were like, ‘We’ve got a bunch of Kim Kardashian jokes.’ And I looked at them and I went… ‘I don’t really care.’”

O’Donnell said she isn’t interested in holding the Kardashian marriage up as an example of anything, even marriage equality, because she can’t even tell the difference between sisters’ Kim, Kourtney and Khloe.

The talk show star is far more interested in keeping up with her eldest son, Parker, who has been matriculating at a military academy away from home. The liberal mom said she had doubts about sending him to the school, but his persistence wore her down and he’s now flourishing at the academy - with a steady stream of care packages arriving from his famous Mom.

”[Parker told me], ‘The whole platoon, they all eat the stuff you send,’” she shared. “I do maybe over-mother him, but I think it’s the greatest thing that ever happened to me.”

“He chose — on his own — actually begged to go to a military academy. And I was like two years of ‘No way,’” Rosie explained. “Truth is, since he was a little boy, that’s his area of interest. The same way I love Streisand and Bette Midler and entertainment, he can tell you any general in any war, what kind of tanks they had, what the battles were like, and so I finally gave in and truthfully, he’s excelling and he’s very happy.”

In some ways, O’Donnell reckons this is her son’s way of rebelling and separating from his outspoken mom, a common phase for every teenager.

“How do you really piss off your really left wing and peace-loving mother? You join the military,” she joked. “He couldn’t get tattoos and have a girlfriend and [be] doing nasty things in the bedroom where I catch him. No, because that I would’ve been, ‘Oh, that’s all right, you’re a teenager.’ He’s like, ‘Mother, I’d like to serve the Nation.’ I’m like crying, ‘Serve me instead!’”

The Rosie Show airs weeknights at 7/ 6 C on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network.
