Taylor Swift's New Single Is a Freaking Gay Anthem for Pride
Taylor Swift said gay rights!
Taylor Swift just released the blatantly Pride-themed bop of the summer and fans are DEAD over it.
Because filling the first single from her upcoming album with an astounding number of rainbows somehow wasn’t gay enough, Tay stepped it up a notch for “You Need to Calm Down" with an entire verse that’s literally about going to a Pride parade.
“Sunshine on the street at the parade/But you would rather be in the dark ages/Makin’ that sign must’ve taken all night,” she sings, in an obvious reference to protestors at Pride.
And in case it wasn’t clear enough, she goes on to mention how the person or people she’s singing about “need to take several seats and then try to restore the peace and control your urges to scream about all the people you hate.”
Why?
And just in case even that wasn’t clear enough to get it through people’s heads that Taylor Swift is literally screaming gay rights, her lyric video shares the lyric “why are you mad when you could be glad” as “GLAAD.” Yes, all caps, no, not a typo. It also highlights anytime the letters “E” and “A” are next to each other, which is already commonly believed to be highlighting the Equality Act, which Taylor has been pushing really, really hard for on her social media this month.
There is absolutely zero doubt whatsoever that this song is for the gays. We hear it, we accept it, and we celebrate it.

While this song is 1000% going to play at any and all remaining Pride celebrations this month, it has also returned queer fans to the question that dominated the countdown clock to the release of “ME!” back in April — Is Taylor Swift about to come out?

On the chance that Taylor IS trying to tell us something, we won't have to wait too long for the next set of blazing rainbow-themed clues. The video for "You Need to Calm Down" is set to premiere on Good Morning America this Monday.
But after that, it may be a long wait for Swifties. Her new album, Lover, isn't dropping until August 23, and we have no word on whether there will be new music...or anything else...coming out before then.
In the meantime, at least we've got this amazing gay anthem to blast for the rest of the month!! And speculate about. And obsess over. And-- sorry, gotta go listen again!
