It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's ... Supergirl's Queer Sister!

Alex Danvers, Supergirl's adoptive sister on the hit CW show, comes out and becomes her own kind of superhero.

While DC may be struggling with its cinematic universe, they're hitting home runs on the small screen. And now that the CBS hit, Supergirl, has joined CW's DC superhero line-up, we can expect the trend to continue.

Fans of the Girl of Steel were treated to a touching (and progressive) story arc this season, involving Kara Danvers' (aka Supergirl's) adoptive older sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh). Having met the tough and sexy detective Maggie (Floriana Lima), Alex realizes she has her own secret identity — she's realizing she is definitely not straight, that she's never been good at dating men, and she's falling for Maggie hard.

While it's refreshing to see sexuality handled as a matter of fact (see Sara Lance on Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, as well as Clark in The 100), it's also nice to see a coming out story — because they still matter. But Alex's story gives a fresh perspective to the good ol' fashioned plot — she's an older character, coming into her own not as a hormonal teenager, but as a woman with a past, a woman with secrets and loyalties and questions about the future.

It's exciting to see this kind of storytelling on TV — and we can't wait to see what's next for Alex and Maggie!
