Can Shane Play Doctor?

With the gay practically air-brushed off her trademark face, pucker subdued, and every strand of hair neatly in place, it took me a while to discern Sha- I mean Kate Moennig on a billboard for her new show, Three Rivers set to start up this fall on CBS. And how will her starved L Word fans react to a Moennig on TV that’s a lot less… lesbian?

I was driving down Santa Monica when I saw someone I knew, or at least she looked like someone I thought I knew.  But there was something different about her. Something strange. It was like I didn’t know who she was anymore. I couldn’t tell by the cookie-cutter do and the baggy clothes covering her usually exposed svelte figure. And though she’ll be handling hearts instead of breaking them as she plays Dr. Miranda Foster, a driven surgical fellow trying to live up to her father’s legacy, will Moennig be able garner as much appeal as a surgeon as when she did as Shane. Before she was Shane McCutcheon, Moennig enjoyed a short stint opposite Kate Bosworth and Ian Somerhalder as Jacqueline 'Jake' Pratt, a teen girl who gender-bends to attend an all-boys academy in Young Americans, and subsequently stirs up all sorts of controversy when she starts winning over an array of girls and boys. Additionally, Moennig has played an MTF transsexual in an episode of Law & Order: SVU, and auditioned for the lead role of Brandon Tina in Boys Don’t Cry, which she lost out to Hilary Swank. Needless to say, Moennig wasn’t afraid to take on eccentric and unconventional roles. So is her new character a regression, or a new refreshing side of the actress we’ve never seen before?

According to the show’s synopsis, Dr. Miranda Foster has a rebellious streak accompanied by a fiery temper, and the show itself promises to stand out amongst the many medical dramas out there as it tells the story of organ transplants in the point of view of the donor, the recipient, and the doctors.  Here’s a quick look at the show.

So how many of us will be tuning in on October 4, to watch Dr. Miranda Foster in action? And how many of us will still love Kate, even in scrubs?
