 NYC to Allow Civil Ceremonies for Gay Couples

Starting June 3, gay couples will be able to get married in New York. The "marriage-like" ceremonies will take place at any of the City Clerk's five borough offices and after the service all couples will be entitled to more legal benefits, within NYC.

The "marriage-like" ceremonies will take place at any of the City Clerk's five borough offices and after the service all couples will be entitled to more legal benefits, within NYC.

City Clerk Michael McSweeney told the Daily News, "We thought it was a good idea.

The city has been registering domestic partners for 17 years, but most of the couples are not gay. In fact, last year's partnerships were 70 percent straight couples filing for partnership status.

Is it a step closer to marriage equality? Or just a bone to throw to keep people complacent and from pursuing full equality?
