Annette Benning on 'The Kids Are All Right' Controversy

Oscar nominee Annette Bening says same-sex couples thank her for making The Kids Are All Right, despite some gay and lesbian people who took umbrage at the heterosexual affair depicted in the film. "I think people have a right to their point of view. If people respond that way, they respond that way. I don’t have a problem with it. I don’t think there are any rules about these things. And there’s an enormous amount of subtlety. You know Lisa, who is a lesbian, wrote it," Bening says.

Oscar nominee Annette Bening says same-sex couples thank her for making The Kids Are All Right, despite some gay and lesbian people who took umbrage at the heterosexual affair depicted in the film, according to entertainment website Deadline.

Asked about the umbrage some took to Julianne Moore's character, Jules, who was partner to Bening's character, Nic, having an affair with their male sperm donor, Bening says she accepts the controversy.

"I think people have a right to their point of view. If people respond that way, they respond that way. I don’t have a problem with it. I don’t think there are any rules about these things. And there’s an enormous amount of subtlety. You know Lisa, who is a lesbian, wrote it," Bening says. "I have had so many same sex couples, both men and women, just kind of grab my arm and say, ‘Oh my god, thanks, this just means a lot.’ So I think when a movie is good, people are going to have reactions. And some people are going to like things and some people aren’t going to like things, and that’s just the nature of it."
