Gay Marriage Fails in New Jersey

Another upset occurred Thursday afternoon when the New Jersey senate failed to land enough votes to advance a same-sex marriage bill, effectively killing chances for gay marriage in the state for the next several years. The measure failed 20 to 14. Governor-elect Chris Christie said he would veto gay marriage legislation, while sitting Governor John Corzine said he would support it.

Another day, another failed gay marriage bid... Another upset occurred Thursday afternoon when the New Jersey --yes the state that gave us that pillar of decency, Jersey Shore -- senate failed to land enough votes to advance a same-sex marriage bill, effectively killing chances for gay marriage in the state for the next several years. The measure failed 20 to 14.

Since Governor-elect Chris Christie, who has vowed to veto any gay marriage legislation, takes office on January 19, the state's legislature was under the gun to hold a vote on the matter.  The state's sitting Governor John Corzine had promised to support a gay marriage measure.

Now, for another marriage equality bill to advance legislatively, New Jersey's senate and assembly need enough votes to override Christie's veto, which seems highly unlikely.
