A Lesbian Cop, A Game of Scrabble Gone Awry and $80K Against NYPD

A lesbian police officer won an $80,000 settlement from the New York City Police Department based on her claim that she was wrongfully accused after a game of Scrabble with a friend turned sour. Officer Sonya Glover said that the incident, which responding police officers allegedly called “some gay thing,” exemplified a pattern of antigay harassment against her.

According to the New York Daily News, Glover claimed in her lawsuit that she was playing Scrabble with a female friend in Queens in 2008 when tempers flared over the rules of play. The argument prompted her friend’s son to call 911.

“Responding cops from the 110th Precinct reported that the dispute ‘involved lesbians’ and referred to the dispute as ‘some gay thing,’ according to court papers.

“Glover was not arrested, there was no evidence that the friend had been hurt and they were not romantically involved, said Glover's lawyer, Eric Sanders, of the firm Jeffrey Goldberg in Lake Success.

“And yet, Glover was brought up on departmental charges and forced to attend eight weeks of domestic abuse counseling.”

A department trial found Glover not guilty and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly will decide her fate.

The Daily News reports that Glover charged she was assigned tasks normally performed by males, like cleaning the men’s bathroom, throughout her career.
