5 Things We Learned From RuPaul

'We’re never trying to be the look and feel of real'

We've already told you who are top five picks for the this season's queens are, but as we prepare for the premiere of Season 7 of RuPaul's Drag Race tonight, it's good to keep in mind the teachings of mother Ru. ETOnline caught up with the world's greatest drag superstar to find out what to expect, including two new permanent judges (Ross Matthews and Carson Kressley) and a slew of new guest judges — and how to keep things fresh when entering this pivotal juncture of a popular series. Here, five things we learned:

Why Drag Race won't 'jump the shark':

“Drag demands that you jump the shark every fucking day,” he says with his signature laugh. “They go hand-in-hand. The more outrageous you can be the better.”

Why the show isn't just a parody of Tyra Banks's America's Next Top Model:

“We’re never trying to be the look and feel of real. We’re like a sampling machine.”

Why it will never be 'mainstream':

“Our show is popular with some people but it’s still underground--honestly. Drag will never be mainstream because it threatens the status quo.”

Why they aren't scared of the thought (or word) police:

“We’ve always done whatever the hell we want to do and we’ll continue to do that. We’ve always come from the place of love and the idea that we’re not coming from a place of love is absolutely outrageous.”

Why Ru is just taking the show's success in stride:

“We’ve enjoyed a beautiful, open window in our culture here in the United States where the powers that be are open to it. I’ve been on the planet for a few years now and, generally speaking, the culture prefers that window closed. I take it as it comes.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race debuts Monday, Mar. 2 at 9 p.m. ET on Logo.
