Natasha Frosh and Tony Friesen got married in Minnesota on Saturday, April 20. But when it came time for the traditional bouquet toss, the bride stepped up to the mic and took a moment to advocate for the freedom to marry for any two people who love one another.

Frosh announced she would be passing the bouquet to her sister, Nitara, an out lesbian. Although Nitara and her wife, Tabatha Trahan, held a commitment ceremony seven years ago, and have three beautiful children together, the state of Minnesota still considers the wives to be legal strangers.

"What I wanted to do was give them the bouquet in hopes that Minnesota lawmakers will actually recognize the right for everyone to marry in Minnesota," said Frosh, handing the bouquet to the Frosh-Trahan kids. "They're married, but we want them to be legally recognized. So I encourage everyone to contact their lawmakers, and let them know that this is really important for families in Minnesota like ours."

In March, a state senate committee advanced a bill that would establish marriage equality in Minnesota to the Senate floor for a full vote. Governor Mark Dayton has promised to sign the legislation if lawmakers can pass it through both chambers of the legislature before the end of the session on May 20.
