Comedian and beloved TV host Ellen DeGeneres frequently surprises her audiences and guests in all kinds of ways. Today she surprised a family who just moved from Tracy, California to Long Beach with $1,500 in gift cards and a plasma television, according to the LA Times.

Allen and Tami Bischofberger and their kids lost almost all of their belongings on Sunday in the middle of their move from Northern California when their U-Haul truck was stolen.

When producers from Ellen's show heard about the family’s situation, they called to invite the Bischofberger family to a taping. Ellen introduced the couple during Tuesday’s taping,  giving the family a $1,000 Target gift card, a $500 Rite Aid gift card and a 42-inch plasma television.

“We want to make it up to you so you know you feel welcome in California,” Ellen explained.

The family’s U-Haul was stolen while parked in front of Allen Bischofberger’s brother’s home. He estimated that the thieves took about 80% of the items that were in the 27-foot U-Haul after seeing what was left once authorities recovered the truck on Monday. Family photos and a few of the children’s stuffed animals were among items recovered.

Ellen isn’t the only Good Samaritan wanting to help Allen and the Bischofberger family. Allen said he has received over 250 emails from people offering assistance and help to the family. “It’s nice to feel and see that people do care,” he noted.
