After 57 years as a couple Karen Bailey and Nelda Majors were married at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix on Sunday, they’re official union made possible via the recent spate of states’ legalizing marriage equality, according to AZFamily.com.
Hundreds turned out for the wedding of the women who were integral to the fight for equality in Arizona having filed suit in the U.S. District Court against Arizona’s marriage ban.
At their wedding their officiate proclaimed, "They feel that 56 and a half years together is a long engagement, but today they now have 1,134 federal laws on their side to protect their relationship,” according to AZFamily.
Bailey and Majors met while living in the same dorm at Sam Houston University in Huntsville, Texas, in 1957, and have since raised two daughters.
Congrats to the happy couple! Here’s to 57 more years together!
