Paul Feig Won't Say If Kate McKinnon's 'Ghostbusters' Character Is Gay

The director "plays coy" when asked about the sexuality of Kate's character in a recent interview with The Daily Beast.

Although Ghostbusters is finally getting the all-female lead cast it so rightfully deserves, it looks like we’ll have to wait a while until the franchise gets a queer female lead character.

In a recent interview with The Daily Beast, director Paul Feig was asked by writer Jen Yamato about whether or not Kate’s character (Jillian Holtzmann) was gay, especially since she is always flirting with Kristen Wiig’s character (Erin Gilbert). His response was, let’s just say, less than exciting.

“I hate to be coy about it,” Feig told The Daily Beast, avoiding the question. “But when you’re dealing with the studios and that kind of thing…”

The whole situation is unfortunate, especially since (like Vanity Fair pointed out) a response like that plays into outdated thoughts and ideas that say a queer lead character would be a bad (and too controversial) move for studios and film execs wanting to make bank on a blockbuster. It’s a lot to take in, especially when you combine it with all of the vitriol the movie has already faced at the hands of sexist, misogynist trolls

Luckily for us, despite what directors or movie studios have to say, just by being herself, Kate McKinnon is still an outspoken and visible member of the LGBT community who rocks any role she takes on. And no character she plays will ever change that.
