Out actress Amber Heard recently revealed why she decided to open up about her sexuality and current relationship with a woman. The 25-year-old Drive Angry and The Playboy Club star publicly confirmed her sexuality by talking about her relationship with artist Tasya van Ree during last year’s GLAAD Awards so she could provide support and encouragement to gays and lesbians still in the closet, reports ShowBizSpy.
“I’ve always been out. Way before that event, there were pictures of me walking to press events holding my girlfriend’s hand,” she said. “I talked about my relationship because there’s a difference between being a private person and being part of the problem. I knew that I had a responsibility to young people, who right now are without many role models, to kind of step out of my comfort zone and acknowledge that I have a girlfriend without being ambiguous about it.
“At the end of the day, if you’re hiding something, then you are inadvertently saying it’s wrong, and I don’t feel like it’s wrong.”
Heard also recently admitted frustration with all the media attention reacting to her coming out, mainly because she is a private person. However, she knows that it’s important to do what is right.
“At the end of the day, I think there is an important moment happening in our society right now, and I have to do the right thing. I don’t label myself one way or another. I come from a place where I find it hard to identify with a label. I’ve dated men in the past, and now I’m dating a woman, and I see it as ultimately no big deal.”
