For Glee fans who haven’t quite latched on to the new characters producers have tried so hard to force feed to die-hard fans of the original cast, Naya Rivera’s presence is always welcomed when there’s a Santana-centric, or even adjacent, episode. It took more than half of the season but the writers finally got Santana to New York where she can interact with other Glee old timers Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Lea Michele). Vulture nabbed Naya for a sit-down about the big Brittana break-up earlier this year and a few other Santana-specific storylines that have recently evolved.
Regarding Brittana’s lesbian fans, Vulture asked Naya if she’s aware that lesbians worldwide still mourn the break.
“Yeah, they’re still not happy about that,” Naya said. “Every now and then I’ll check Twitter and “Brittana forever!” will be trending worldwide. It’s amazing they do that. But yeah, they’re still not happy.”
On why the writers separated one of TV’s most beloved lady couples Naya replied that she wasn’t sure why it happened but that she thinks it’s not necessarily a bad idea.
“You know, I haven’t spoken to them about why, but I felt like it was just the natural choice. Brittany is obviously still in high school and Santana has now moved to New York,” Naya told Vulture. “And they’ve been exploring the long-distance thing with — I’m gonna say it — Klaine, but not for Brittany and Santana. I like that so far.”
In regard to the much-anticipated Santana/Quinn (Dianna Agron) hook-up that went down in the wedding episode, Naya admitted she was a little surprised by the choice but just went with it.
“That was really weird. I think it was just like, ‘Oh, we’re having this wedding, and everyone’s gonna hook up. And that’s just what’s happening!’” Naya said. “I didn’t really think anything of it. I just thought that it made sense because [Quinn] is like a crazy person anyways. Of course she would just try this because she would try anything.”
While the Quinntana coupling –however fleeting—may have been an interesting choice, Naya did tell Vulture that she Quinn is secretly her favorite character.
“Quinn has literally done everything. She’s been paralyzed. She’s been pregnant. She’s now been a lesbian for a minute. She tried to steal a baby,” Naya said. “She was a bad girl who smoked, and then she didn’t smoke. Quinn is secretly my favorite character just because she’s so out there.”
Tune in to tonight’s Glee where Naya will do a killer version of Paula Abdul’s “Cold Hearted.”
And you're not alone if you miss the old Glee. Naya does too.
"It does feel like a different show and sometimes I get really sad about it," Naya said. "We shoot on the same soundstage, but there’s this big door that separates the two worlds, so on my lunch breaks I’ll go over there and see [Kevin McHale] and [Jenna Ushkowitz] and everybody I haven’t seen, like, “I miss you guys! What are you doing?'"
