While other LGBTQ+ shows are getting canceled and yanked off streaming platforms seemingly every time we blink lately, Our Flag Means Death is still pushing onward towards its highly anticipated second season.

The first season of the pirate rom-com ended in a dark place for many of the characters, after Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) made a bold choice of betrayal that leaves him separated from his heartbroken love interest, Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby).

Fans are eager to find out if and how the two will come back together, but they probably shouldn’t expect it to be easy.

“I don’t think [showrunner] David Jenkins is ever going to follow an expected route,” Con O’Neill, who plays Izzy Hands, told Vanity Fair. “I’d hate to drive in a car with him.”

O’Neill also opened up about Izzy’s upcoming journey—last season saw him playing the more stoic, pragmatic character who disapproved of the relationship between Blackbeard and Stede, and soon we may learn why.

“He understands what love is and whom he’s in love with,” the actor teased. “Physically it’s been quite demanding, and also emotionally it’s been quite demanding to be playing a man enraged by unrequited love, who’s basically a hopeless romantic, and to be able to play all that and also remember that this is fundamentally a comedy.”

Vanity Fair also shared images from the new episodes, with photos promising the return of fan favorite characters, along with our first glimpse of new cast members like Minnie Driver.

The next season is expected to premiere on Max sometimes in October, and the first season is currently available to stream.
