A Republican lawmaker in Maryland attempted to impeach the state's attorney general but his request was quickly dismissed on Wednesday by the House of Delegates committee. The GOP lawmaker was motivated by the attorney general's recent opinion on same-sex marriage.
Del. Don H. Dwyer Jr. asked delegates to initiate the impeachment process for Democrat Douglas F. Gansler, who said Maryland should recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.
The House Judiciary Committee rejected Dwyer's effort, by a 15-5 vote, and ruled that Gansler's conduct did not merit impeachment proceedings. Republican Del. Susan McComas, voted alongside the Dems on the committee in opposing impeachment. Two members abstained from the vote.
Dwyer attempted to force a vote by the larger 141-member delegation, but the Democratic House Speaker Michael E. Busch, pushed the issue to the Judiciary Committee, a 22-member panel that includes Dwyer. Delegates voted 101-39 on the procedural motion to send the impeachment articles to the Judiciary Committee.
